  • Death toll of a devastating earthquake in southern Türkiye and Syria has jumped to more than 7-thousand-800 people. This as rescuers worked against time in harsh winter conditions to dig survivors out of the rubble of collapsed buildings.
  • Parliament has set aside about eight million rands to cover the cost of this year’s State of the Nation Address, as well as the cost of the tabling of the budget vote later this month. Former President Thabo Mbeki and Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and his deputy Mandisa Maya, along with 15 other judges, are among 263 invited guests. While the EFF has threatened to disrupt the President’s address to demand answers regarding Phala Phala, other civic organisations are planning a march on SONA day, to call for an end to load shedding. Parliament says plans are in place to handle any eventuality.
  • Former President Jacob Zuma has turned to the Constitutional Court to appeal the judgment which saw President Cyril Ramaphosa obtain an interim interdict in January. A full bench at the Gauteng High Court in January granted Ramaphosa an interdict. The court granted the interdict pending the outcome of Ramaphosa’s challenge to the private prosecution bid against him scheduled to be heard in May. Former President Zuma launched the private prosecution bid against the President for allegedly contravening the NPA Act on the alleged disclosure of his medical records.
