BAR EN GER is deur Geraldine Aaron geskryf.
Feesgangers kan bespreek by www.LTickets.co.za
Road safety tips for elderly drivers.
The ability to drive is not just about getting from point A to point B – it’s about independence and freedom, and for many elderly drivers, it’s a way to remain an active part of the world. For senior citizens, the goal is to drive as long as it’s safe to do so, ensuring not just their well-being but also the safety of fellow motorists.
In South Africa, there’s no specific age limit for driving. However, as we age, changes in reaction times and vision are natural. Driver’s licenses must be renewed every five years, and this includes an eye test, ensuring that your abilities behind the wheel are in line with safety standards.
As you age, joints become stiffer and muscles may weaken. Arthritis, which is common among older adults, might affect your ability to drive. Certain vehicle adaptations can assist with this. As your hearing changes, you might struggle to hear sounds like sirens or hooters from outside of your car or even sounds coming from your car.
“Ensuring safety behind the wheel is critical for elderly drivers. Whether it’s maintaining your car, embracing new safety technologies, or considering vehicle adaptations, there are some ways to keep elderly drivers safe while they’re out on the road,” points out Barend Smit, Marketing Director of MotorHappy, a supplier of motor management solutions.
Maintaining your car is a vital aspect of road safety. Regular servicing keeps brakes, tyres, and crucial components in optimal condition, reducing the chances of unexpected breakdowns on the road.
Investing in a Service Plan or Maintenance Plan is one way to manage costs, and ensures that the vehicle receives regular check-ups, addressing potential issues before they become hazards. It also helps avoid any big surprise bills when it comes to car repair. An important bonus of a Maintenance Plan through MotorHappy is that it comes with free roadside assistance. If anything does happen when you’re out on the road, you can trust that you will be able to get help quickly and efficiently.
“Elderly drivers might also want to consider the kind of car they’re driving,” says Smit. “Modern cars are equipped with an array of safety features designed to assist drivers, especially those who might benefit from additional support. Technologies like collision warning systems, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warnings can be invaluable for elderly drivers. These features act as a second set of eyes, alerting drivers to potential dangers and even intervening when necessary, reducing the risk of accidents.”
For elderly drivers, comfort and control are paramount. Certain vehicle adaptations can significantly enhance the driving experience. Cushions and seat pads provide extra support and comfort, while convex or multifaceted mirrors expand the field of vision, reducing blind spots. Steering wheel covers improve grip and ease the strain on hands. Additionally, hand controls offer an alternative way to operate the vehicle, allowing drivers to manage all functions without using their legs.
Additional road safety tips for elderly drivers

Ten tips to be your best in 2024.
If you ended last year feeling exhausted to the point of burnout, now is the time to reset to avoid falling into the same unsustainable patterns for the year ahead. Set the pace for a productive and fulfilling 2024 with these insights and tips from Netcare Akeso.
“When our work-life balance falls out of kilter, all spheres of life are likely to suffer eventually unless we take steps to assert our boundaries to redress the balance,” says Megan Gonsalves, Netcare Akeso’s Crisis Line and marketing manager.
“Taking the time to reflect on the past year allows us to assess whether we devote enough time and energy to our physical and mental wellbeing, relationships with others and our occupations.
“In the pace of modern life, additional pressures can easily start heaping up on us if we do not have strong boundaries. The beginning of the year is therefore the ideal time to plan proactively how to manage the demands of the year ahead.”
Gonsalves points out that there will always be things outside of one’s control. “It is essential to develop our strategies, internal resources and skills in advance to cope in difficult times, which are inevitably part of life.
Ashira Moonsamy, an occupational therapist practising at Netcare Akeso Richards Bay and Netcare Akeso Umhlanga, adds that intentional mental preparation for the year ahead helps set the course toward achieving the necessary balance for optimal, sustainable functioning.
Moonsamy’s 10 tips to plan for a strong 2024:
- Be realistic about what you can take on. Setting goals for the year ahead requires an honest evaluation of the commitment and capacity available for these tasks. Consider setting a series of more achievable goals spaced throughout the year, contributing towards your ultimate objectives for 2024.
- What fuels you? Only you can decide what your needs are for keeping motivated and fulfilled year-round. Plan positive ways of replenishing yourself when the going gets tough, such as relaxing activities, spending time with family, or dedicating time to giving back to your community.
- Make space in your diary for rest and relaxation. Maintaining our wellbeing requires taking regular breaks, which ultimately enable us to achieve more overall.
- Nurture your good relationships. Surround yourself with people who are good for you, and invest time in supportive, fulfilling relationships with your partner, friends and family. If you are struggling to connect emotionally, this could be a warning sign of burnout.
- Commit to a healthy routine. Sleep, exercise and self-care are the foundation of our resilience to stress and cannot be sacrificed to make way for added responsibilities – no matter how busy 2024 turns out to be.
- Remember, it’s OK to say ‘No’. Setting healthy boundaries and sticking to them helps protect us from becoming overwhelmed or feeling resentful as the year progresses.
- Create an early warning stress scale. Identify the different levels and associated symptoms of stress you have experienced before, ranging from healthy positive forms of stress that contribute to motivation to more harmful levels of distress that may be mild, moderate or severe.
- Plan your support resources. Talking through our worries with a friend or loved one can often help us process stress and put it in greater perspective. In addition, Netcare Akeso’s 24-hour crisis line is always available on 0861 435 787 with trained counsellors to listen and guide you on the various options for professional mental health support if needed.
- Don’t put your eggs all in one basket. Maintain different areas of your life, including work, social life, hobbies and interests, as this will help you to draw energy and support from the areas that are going better than others.
- Allow for flexibility and practise self-compassion. Begin the new year with realistic expectations for a few bumps in the road ahead. Be gentle with yourself, and remain adaptable to make the best of 2024, whatever this year may bring.

BREAKING RACIAL BARRIERS 50 YEARS ON.
In many countries, racial unity is a vital, though at times elusive, goal. This January, Jehovah’s Witnesses in South Africa look back at a landmark moment in their history in which that goal was on display.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are known for their annual regional conventions in cities around the world, including many parts of South Africa. These large-scale events bring together Jehovah’s Witnesses of all backgrounds as well as the public. The convention of 1974, held in the Rand Stadium during the time of Apartheid, was the first time that Witnesses from different races were given permission to meet together in the same venue. Over 33 400 people attended.
The exceptional convention was held from January 2 to 6, 1974, making this year the 50th anniversary of the event. The theme was ‘Divine Victory,’ and the social unity on display was certainly a victory.
“This was a unique and special moment for Jehovah’s Witnesses and the country at large. It was a large-scale event in which people from different races could unite for the common goal of learning about the Creator,” said Mzamo Goloda, National Spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses in South Africa.
For the first four and a half days of the convention, attendees met in smaller groups in separate venues, based on race and language. However, permission was granted to invite all the races to assemble together for the final session on Sunday afternoon.
Alfred Phatswana who is now in his 60s attended the convention recalls: “During the apartheid era, it was rare to see people of different races meet together. Everything in South Africa, including public transportation was classified as ‘blacks only’ or ‘whites only.’ It was wonderful to see the contrast among this group of people.”
Keith Wiggill, who is now in his 70s recalls: “It was an unbelievable occasion to see different races united by faith. We were very grateful that we were allowed and exemption to the segregation laws so that we could gather together as a large family of faith.”
Over the years, South Africa has hosted many conventions, some of which include international delegates and have attendance figures of over 60,000 people, as was the case in 2019.
Jehovah’s Witnesses make sure that people of all races have access to information about the Bible. They have developed the most widely translated website in the world, jw.org, which is now translated into over 1,080 languages.

Back to school does not have to be stressful.
The beginning of the school year doesn’t have to be a daunting time for young people. Parents and teachers can do much to help support the physical and mental wellbeing of their children as they navigate new schools, teachers or classrooms.
“While some anxiety is expected in children at this time, it should not be ignored,” says Dr Cathelijn Zeijlemaker, a family physician and director of Netcare’s Primary Care division, of which Netcare Medicross is a subsidiary, sharing her advice for parents to help their children through what can be a difficult time.
She says it may not always be obvious that your child is struggling.
“Smaller children may not know how to verbalise how they are feeling, so parents should be on the lookout for signals from their children which could indicate discomfort or anxiety. These could include children seeking their reassurance more than they normally do, complaining of tummy aches or other ailments, being more emotional than usual or displaying changes in their sleeping or eating patterns,” says Dr Zeijlemaker.
“A check-up with your child’s family doctor at the beginning of the school year can help set parents’ minds at ease and distinguish any medical concerns that need to be addressed. In addition, children’s anxiety can often be helped by explaining to them that many other children will be feeling the same way,” she says.
“Studies show that children who eat a nutritious breakfast perform better. Ensuring your child has a breakfast that contains some protein will assist them to do better in school by having better concentration and more energy.
“Make sure your children’s vaccinations are up to date and ensure they have any medication, like asthma pumps, they may need at school. Also, make sure their new class teacher knows about any medical conditions they have and how to manage them.”
Children quickly feel judged, lectured or punished and will therefore avoid talking about touchy subjects. Create an environment where you can listen uninterrupted, don’t judge and your child feels safe to share.
The start of the year is a good time to engage about your child’s use of social media and ensure that they use it safely in an age-appropriate manner. “Social media can be an important aid to learning if used correctly. Parents should keep up to date with the latest trends in social media, so they know what they are talking about when interacting with their children. Be aware of online bullying or children using social media sites in a way that is not suitable for their ages,” she says.
“A good night’s rest helps to enable concentration while children are at their desks. To ensure quality sleep parents should consider encouraging good sleep hygiene, like a set time for bed and limiting screen time in the evenings.”
If you suspect your child may have learning challenges, immediately schedule an appointment with their school to see what they can do to help and get advice on how best you can help your child, says Dr Zeijlemaker.
“Potential problems can sometimes be signalled by a change in your child’s appetite, weight or sleeping habits. If you have any concerns about your child’s health, including their mental or behavioural health, General Practitioners [GPs], such as those practising at Netcare Medicross medical centres, are there to assist and may refer children to the services of experts like occupational therapists, paediatricians or educational psychologists where needed.
Angela Morisse, acting clinical manager and occupational therapist at Netcare Akeso’s Milnerton Clinic shares some practical strategies to support children during this period of adjustment, emphasising the importance of seamlessly reintegrating school life into daily routines.
As a vital member of the multidisciplinary team at Netcare Akeso mental health facilities, she highlights the pivotal role of occupational therapy, a discipline that encompasses a thorough evaluation of an individual’s functioning within their environment, aiming to assist them in adapting and excelling in every aspect of their life.
With the overall wellbeing of children navigating the challenges of returning to structured schedules in mind, Morisse provides four pragmatic ways to help children get back into a routine after the long holidays.
- Set clear tasks but keep it visual and fun
Make a visual chart with specific tasks and have a space to tick off each task when it has been completed. These could include going to sleep and waking up at the right time, their meal and snack times, brushing their teeth, tidying their room, packing their bag for the next day and any chores they need to do. This can be adapted when new tasks such as homework, projects, and after-school activities are added.
- Have a bedtime routine
Establishing a consistent bedtime routine aids children in adjusting to a regular sleep schedule. This can include brushing their teeth, putting their electronic devices away at least 30 minutes before bedtime, and doing an age-appropriate calming activity such as reading, colouring in, or journalling. A small reward for completing the routine every day for a week is a good motivator. This could be a trip to the park or time with family – it doesn’t have to cost money.
- Provide emotional support
To help children with the emotional demands of starting school again you could have a morning check in where everyone says what emotion they are feeling. Once again, a visual chart can help younger children to express themselves better. This will allow you to keep track of your child’s emotions around school and help prompt a conversation when they pick emotions like feeling sad, scared or angry.
Morisse emphasises the importance of making sure your child is learning in a compassionate, enabling environment where they feel safe rather than feeling that they are under pressure to excel.
“Be mindful of the expectations you set for your children, stressing the value of effort rather than just results. Don’t make them feel like they are under a lot of pressure to excel as this can cause anxiety and stress in children and may make them want to avoid school.”
- Teach children to care for their physical health
Encourage children to take a break and enjoy fresh air by playing outside before starting their homework. Remember that as a child, their main occupation is play.
“Help your children implement their routine and keep track of their homework, but don’t do it for them,” says Morisse. “You are helping them build the habits they will need to foster future independence. Avoid doing everything for them, and rather promote self-reliance based on their age.”
Don’t forget to help your child by having a positive attitude towards their return to school. But, if you have any concerns about how your child is coping at school, seek professional advice as soon as possible.
Netcare Medicross and Netcare Akeso have a range of practitioners who can address the needs of children of all ages.

TEA DRINKERS MORE LIKELY TO KEEP THEIR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS.
Millions of people around the globe will have made New Year’s resolutions to improve themselves or their lives in various ways in 2024. Despite the initial enthusiasm, maintaining resolutions throughout the year can be challenging for many.
While it may sound unusual, drinking tea could help those who struggle with keeping their resolutions to stay on course.
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC) believes tea drinkers may be at a slight advantage when it comes to keeping New Year’s resolutions.
She says many resolutions often revolve around health and fitness, financial goals, personal development, career aspirations and relationships, which are all areas where tea-drinking can contribute positively.
“Those that make resolutions related to health and wellness, such as exercising more, eating healthier or reducing stress can benefit from herbal infusions like Rooibos. The tisane is rich in antioxidants and can promote relaxation and reduce stress, thereby supporting overall well-being. In addition, drinking herbal tisanes can potentially help improve focus and concentration, boosting mental clarity.
“There’s something special about a symbolic oath taken as a resolution at the start of each new year, which we shouldn’t lose sight of.”
Here’s how incorporating Rooibos into your new year routine can indirectly support and contribute to achieving your resolutions for 2024:
- A healthy body houses a healthy mind: Rooibos contains antioxidants that have been linked to various health benefits, including a reduced risk of certain chronic diseases, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and neurological disorders, like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The unique combination of antioxidants found in Rooibos help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, making you less susceptible to disease.
- Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining good health. When consumed without adding sugar, Rooibos can contribute to your daily fluid intake, aiding healthy hydration.
- Digestive health: Herbal teas like Rooibos, ginger and peppermint are known for their digestive benefits. A healthy digestive system can contribute to your overall well-being and help you feel more comfortable while working towards your resolutions.
- Replacing unhealthy habits: For those resolving to cut down on unhealthy habits like excessive intake of sugary beverages, substituting these with Rooibos can be a healthier alternative. Rooibos in naturally sweet, so there is no need to add sugar.
- Mindfulness and relaxation: Some resolutions involve practicing mindfulness, reducing stress or improving mental health. Taking a moment to prepare and enjoy a cup of Rooibos can serve as a mindfulness practice, providing a calming ritual that helps you to relax and focus.
- Lower risk of depression: In recent years, the role of nutrition in mental health and preventative medicine, has prompted explorations into the effects of tea, especially herbal tea, on mental health. Researchers found that frequent tea consumption has a strong linear relationship with reduced rates of depression. One study determined that for every three cups of tea consumed a day, the relative risk of depression decreased by 37%. Rooibos contains two rare antioxidants, namely, aspalathin and nothofagin, which interferes with the production of cortisol – a stress hormone secreted by the adrenal gland. Along with its stress-lowering effect, it is likely that other healthy compounds in Rooibos stimulate a positive response in the gut and brain, which also improves mood.
- Caffeine control: If your resolution is to cut down on caffeine, opting for Rooibos, which is naturally caffeine-free, can help in reducing your caffeine intake.
“Ultimately, while tea drinking can complement a healthy lifestyle and indirectly support resolution-keeping efforts, success in maintaining goals depend on various factors, including commitment, planning, consistency and a holistic approach to health and well-being. By including a daily cup of Rooibos can be a supportive element within a broader framework of healthy habits that can set you off on the right path,” says du Toit.

Solar trends every homeowner should know about in 2024.
As load-shedding intensifies and electricity prices surge, an increasing number of homeowners are gravitating towards solar energy, attracted by its substantial cost- and energy-saving potential.
“The onset of the new year is the ideal time to consider your household’s energy needs for the next twelve months, and start planning how you can save energy, save money, and ensure you have sustained access to a reliable source of electricity – especially as diesel prices rise, making generators even more expensive,” says Rein Snoeck Henkemans, Managing Director of Alumo Energy.
“For that, nothing beats the long-term savings potential of a professionally installed, quality home solar system which could serve your family for decades to come, and increase the value of your home.”
Heading into 2024, he notes that there are a few solar trends that homeowners should consider:
- Advancements in smart monitoring technology
As solar grows in popularity, and international solar producers innovate to keep up, the technology running the systems is rapidly advancing, making new systems even more efficient than their predecessors.
“In the near future, we anticipate a significant shift towards artificial intelligence-enabled smart monitoring systems. These advanced systems will collect data, and continuously analyse and learn from it, optimising energy production and consumption in real-time and also detect potential issues,” Snoeck Henkemans explains.
- Battery efficiency improvements
Continued work is being done to develop batteries with higher energy densities and longer lifespans. The use of new and advanced materials in battery manufacturing can lead to more efficient energy storage.
Smart battery management systems with integrated tools have a substantially increased capacity to optimise the performance of batteries in solar systems. These systems can monitor and manage the state of charge and other important parameters of a battery, thereby enhancing its efficiency and lifespan.
Solar systems are increasingly migrating from low to mid or high voltage batteries. High voltage batteries are better for the system, delivering the same amount of power using less current and improving the overall energy transfer efficiency. These batteries are also more compatible with modern appliance and, for example, electric vehicles, which often require higher voltages for optimal operation.
Innovations in battery manufacturing processes will ultimately lead to more efficient and cost-effective batteries, which includes the development of more sustainable and scalable manufacturing processes.
- Shrinking divide between grid energy costs and solar instalments
The cost of solar panels and related equipment has decreased significantly over the years, as technological advancements have improved the efficiency of solar panels, and economies of scale have reduced manufacturing costs. Additionally, a global oversupply of components has seen many suppliers reduce prices to sell stock – a trend that should continue for the first six months of 2024.
“This bodes well for homeowners, as price decreases will make it even more cost-effective to install a solar system instead of relying on grid energy, which is getting more expensive every year,” says Snoeck Henkemans.
He notes that energy prices continue to rise while homeowners have less hours of electricity every day. In July 2023, the price of Eskom-supplied electricity soared by 18.49%, with more above-inflation increases expected this year.
“Rent-to-own options, such as those provided by Alumo, could cost the same as your monthly energy bill. This would mean that the full amount would be paid off within a short few years, and homeowners could save substantially on their monthly electricity bill. The other benefit of these systems is that they provide homeowners with constant access to an energy supply during load-shedding, while lowering energy usage throughout the rest of the day,” concludes Snoeck Henkemans.

Homeschooling and online schooling are entering a period of consolidation — here’s what that means.
By Louise Schoonwinkel, MD of Optimi Home
In the years during and since COVID-19, homeschooling and online schooling have grown in ways that no one could have anticipated. What was once a relatively niche offering has become increasingly commonplace. New courses in new languages are constantly being developed. New legislation is being debated and drafted. And new providers are launching.
As a lot of the initial fanfare starts to subside, however, the sector seems to be at a point of consolidation. Rather than consistently pushing, reputable providers are taking a moment to step back and evaluate. What are we doing well? What could we be doing better? What do our learners need the most?
It’s time to choose the right provider
Developments over the last few years have made it clear that not all homeschooling and online schooling providers are the same. While many of the companies that grew out of the pandemic have the knowledge, expertise, and resources required to deliver the quality education that homeschoolers and online learners need, some don’t.
It’s become more important than ever for parents, guardians, and learners to assess their chosen provider carefully. Companies that can demonstrate an impressive legacy, exceptional offerings, and strong relationships with industry bodies are likely to stand out in this growing market.
It’s time for some important legislative shifts
This period of consolidation hasn’t been a period of stagnation, and some important conversations are happening at government level about how to regulate online schooling. The legislation around homeschooling is well established — it dates to the dawn of South Africa’s Constitution in 1996. But online schooling legislation is only just starting to gain momentum.
What’s clear right now is that the two won’t ultimately fall under the same umbrella in terms of how they are governed. A draft framework for online schooling has been developed that suggests that online schooling providers will register with the Department of Basic Education, just like any school would. However, like homeschooling, assessment processes are likely to be tightly controlled.
Again, reputable providers will welcome these stipulations. But they will likely be treated with fear by those less reputable.
It’s time for quality
At Impaq, this time has involved a doubling down on quality. We believe now is the time to deliver an exceptional product developed by leading educators so that home and online learners can get the most out of their education. It’s about high-quality resources, innovative approaches, and meaningful engagement. It’s about dedicated fitness, wellness and digital offerings. And it’s about looking to the future as we think about online exams.
We want our homeschoolers to have everything they need from their materials and our online learners to have the best teachers in their virtual classrooms. We’re here to promote homeschooling and online schooling as a viable alternative to brick-and-mortar schools — for learners who can’t access traditional schools, live in remote areas, have extracurricular commitments, or thrive in smaller learning environments.
Homeschooling and online schooling providers are establishing themselves as critical parts of South Africa’s education system. During this time, a moment of reflection is essential — it will ensure their long-term value for decades to come.

The world stands together with our farmers / Die wêreld staan saam met ons boere.

In the past week, columns of tractors have blocked roads in Germany, causing chaos in cities and headaches for commuters. But it’s nothing new. In recent years, farmers in western Europe have fought with increasing ferocity against policies that they believe are restricting effective farming practices.
TLU SA acknowledges the position taken around the world in support of food-producing farmers. Each country faces its own challenges that hinder many farmers from continuing to farm sustainably.
In South Africa, we are experiencing a shortage of electricity, underutilised ports, and neglected roads that prevent farmers from delivering products to consumers. A declining economy caused by the mismanagement of the ruling party has made sustainable farming almost impossible.
It is time for governments worldwide to recognise that when farmers, the ones who produce food for its citizens, are taken away from their farms, the country and all its people are at risk. There are more than 8 billion people in the world who all depend on the food produced by an estimated 570 million farms, i.e. every farm has to provide for about 140 people. In South Africa this number is about 10 times higher – here every commercial farmer provides for more than 1400 people.
The world’s most important asset is its producing farmers.
It is time for everyone, especially governments, to understand that without successful farmers there is no food, no economic growth, no future. Sustainable production practices and continued research are imperative for the future of farming.
Today, we express our gratitude to every individual and organisation that supports and empower farmers. Thank you for standing up for the people who ensure we have food for our families. TLU SA has been walking this path for 127 years and will continue on this journey. Let us join hands to ensure the future of agriculture worldwide.

CAMPUS COUNTDOWN: FIRST-YEAR CHECKLIST TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING AT UNIVERSITY.
The clock is ticking for the Matric Class of 2023 students who are set to start their higher education journey in the coming days. Starting university is exciting and challenging, but visions for this major next step in life and towards adulthood are often tempered by uncertainty. New students will feel a mix of emotions, such as curiosity, enthusiasm, nervousness and anxiety. Students (and their parents) also have many questions about what to expect and how to cope with the new academic and social environment.
Dr Linda Meyer, Managing Director at IIE Rosebank College, a brand of The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s leading private higher education provider, says it is natural and appropriate to feel overwhelmed during this time, but says there are a few guidelines that can assist new students to ease the transition. These include:
MAKING THE MOST OF ORIENTATION OPPORTUNITIES
“Orientation is a great opportunity to get familiar with the campus, meet new people, and learn about the resources and services available to you. It is also a chance to have fun and make friends before classes start,” Dr Meyer says.
“Try to attend as many orientation events as possible, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek help if needed. Orientation is designed to help you transition smoothly and successfully to university life.”
TAKING TIME TO UNDERSTAND YOUR UNI’S SYSTEMS LOGISTICS
University systems and logistics will differ significantly from what you were used to in high school. For example, you may have to register for courses online, use a student portal to access your grades and assignments or follow a different academic calendar. You may also have to deal with financial matters, such as paying tuition fees, applying for scholarships, or managing your budget.
“To avoid confusion and stress, ensure you understand how these systems and logistics work, and keep track of important dates and deadlines. You can also consult your academic advisor, student services, or other staff members about any issues or concerns.
“Additionally, get a good understanding of the physical campus environment. Make sure you know where the buildings and classes are located and additional services you may need to access.”
GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE TECH ENVIRONMENT
Technology is an essential part of university education, notes Dr Meyer.
“You will need to use various devices, software and platforms to complete your coursework, communicate with your lecturers and peers, and access online resources. You may also have to adapt to different learning modes, such as online, hybrid, or blended courses.
“To prepare for this, ensure you have the necessary tech equipment, and familiarise yourself with the tech tools and platforms your university uses, such as email, learning management systems, video conferencing, and online libraries. If you encounter any tech problems or need any tech support, find the support you need to iron out these issues as soon as possible.”
MANAGING EXPECTATIONS
University expectations are different from what you experienced in high school. You will have to deal with more academic rigour, more independence, more responsibility, and more diversity. You will also need to carefully balance your academic, personal, and social life and cope with various challenges and pressures.
“To meet these expectations, you need to develop skills and strategies, such as critical thinking, research, writing, time management, self-motivation, self-care, and stress management. You should also set realistic and achievable goals, seek feedback and guidance, and celebrate your achievements and progress.
“Don’t stress about academics too much in the first week or two. Everyone is still finding their feet. Just ensure you get to grips with your new environment and keep putting one foot in front of the other.”
DEVELOPING TIME MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Time management is one of the most important skills for university success.
“You will need to manage your time effectively and efficiently and prioritise your tasks and activities. You will also have to deal with multiple and competing demands, such as assignments, exams, extracurriculars, work, and social life,” says Dr Meyer.
“To improve your time management, plan ahead, create a schedule, use a calendar or a planner, set reminders and alarms, and stick to your routine. Remember you are now accountable to yourself, and your success will depend on your ability to be disciplined and consistent.”
JOINING CULTURAL CLUBS & SPORTS TEAMS
Joining clubs or sports teams is a great way to enrich your university experience. You can pursue your interests, hobbies, passions, or talents or discover new ones. You can also meet new people, make friends, network, and socialise.
“Joining clubs or sports teams can also improve your physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and provide much-needed balance to your academic work.”
Finally, it is important to know that help is available, and to seek support timeously, whether it be for academic or personal reasons.
“University can be challenging and stressful, and you may face various difficulties or problems along the way. Most good higher education institutions will have the necessary support services in place, to assist you with challenges you face,” says Dr Meyer.
“If you feel overwhelmed, confused, stuck, or unhappy, don’t hesitate to seek help timeously, whether it be academic or mental wellness support. Seeking help timeously is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and courage.”

No school placement? No problem! Here’s how to work through the CAPS curriculum so your child isn’t left behind.
As schools across the country prepare to open, many parents are still battling to secure placements for their children. Their efforts are hindered by administrative delays, vandalism, infrastructure issues, and, in particular, problems with overcrowding. As of 10 January, almost 1 400 learners still hadn’t been placed in Gauteng alone.
If you are one of the many parents trying to secure a place for your child, alternative options are available. Homeschooling is an excellent choice for parents with the time and capacity to support their children through their education, while online schooling is available to those who prefer their children’s classes to be facilitated virtually by qualified teachers.
These options aren’t only available to parents who have battled to get their child into their school of choice for 2024. They are also ideally suited to any child who might fare better in smaller, more focused educational environments.
If you are interested in homeschooling, don’t be deterred by the prospect of navigating the CAPS curriculum at home. The team at Impaq is here to guide you every step of the way!
Planning tips
With Impaq Homeschooling, the planning is done for you as learners have access to the Optimi Learning Portal (OLP). Here, you can find carefully crafted lesson plans that tell you exactly how much time you need to spend on each subject and how to integrate the lesson plans with the learner material. The curriculum is broken down into manageable, bite-sized sections to help you and your child know exactly what to focus on each term.
New homeschooling parents may find the CAPS curriculum to be content-heavy and may wonder which areas to prioritise. Using a curriculum provider such as Impaq can simplify this process. As of this year, Impaq provides learners with subject-specific frameworks highlighting key areas you and your child need to focus on. The content is organised in a way that makes it easier for you to work through the curriculum and meet CAPS requirements.
Readily available support
As a homeschooling parent, you will receive your own facilitator’s guides to help you teach your child at home. These detailed documents offer step-by-step advice on how to set your child up for success. Timetables are also provided to help you prepare for tests and exams, and a team of education specialists is on hand to help, especially for more complex subjects like maths and science.
Additional online resources
Impaq learners have access to the Optimi Learning Portal (OLP), which contains a wealth of digital resources. Educational videos, quizzes, previous examination papers, helpful notes and more are available to supplement your child’s lesson material. Live and recorded subject guidance sessions are also on hand to support your child as they complete specific assessments and work through complex concepts.
Progress tracking
Tracking your child’s progress is easy. Log on to the learning portal to see which lessons your child has completed (marked in green) and which lessons they still need to complete (marked in red). You’ll also be able to capture the marks for their tasks, tests, and exams (depending on their grade) and generate report cards. This will help you assess which topics or subjects they excel in and where they might need additional support.
With Impaq, there’s no need to worry about your child being left behind. Understanding and implementing the CAPS curriculum is easy, and through the detailed lesson plans, guidelines and support structures, you can make homeschooling the answer to your current placement concerns. Of course, online schooling is also an option if you would prefer the help of a qualified teacher.

Essential car maintenance tips for summer.
Summer is in full swing, and that means scorching temperatures, long road trips, and plenty of adventures under the sun. While you’re busy planning your next beach getaway or game drive, don’t forget to give your trusty vehicle some TLC too.
“The heat can be tough on your car, but a little preventive car maintenance goes a long way,” advises Barend Smit, Marketing Director of MotorHappy, a supplier of motor management solutions.
Before hitting the road this summer, you can take several simple precautions to keep you and your passengers safe and your car in good condition:
- Keep your engine cool. Ensure your car’s cooling system is working properly by checking coolant levels and inspecting hoses for cracks and leaks. Also, inspect the radiator for debris or dirt that might block airflow.
- Check that the aircon is working smoothly and replace air filters if necessary. This is usually covered by most car services.
- Inspect tyre pressure and tread depth. Hot weather can cause tyre pressure to rise, leading to blowouts. Check your tyre pressure regularly and maintain it within the manufacturer’s recommended range. (You can find a guideline inside your driver’s door.) If your tyres’ tread is low, consider replacing your tyres.
- Protect your car’s interior from the harsh sunlightwith a windshield sunshade and apply a UV protectant.
- Ensure oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid are at the proper levels. The heat can cause fluids to evaporate more quickly.
- If your car battery is more than three years old, have it tested to ensure it can handle the extra strain of summer driving? Examine the battery terminals for corrosion and clean them if needed.
- Have your brakes inspected. The heat can be hard on a car’s brakes.
“If you’re not comfortable performing these checks yourself, take your car to a trusted mechanic for a comprehensive summer maintenance check,” advises Smit. “This is especially important if you’re planning any road trips this summer. Don’t leave car care to the last minute. Give yourself enough time (and budget) to ensure your car is safe for the road.”
A recent survey in the UK shows that many motorists are skipping car services due to the cost-of-living crisis, and with November and December traditionally a more expensive month for most consumers, it might be tempting to forego car services. Smit advises against this. “Having your car serviced on time saves money in the long run because small problems can be identified before they become more costly issues. It’s at times like these that a service plan makes sense. A service plan is a way of budgeting for car services, with affordable monthly payment options. This way, when it comes time to service your car, you know you are already covered. This makes it easier to manage your budget for other year-end expenses.”
Remember, taking care of your car in the summer isn’t just about keeping it looking good; it’s about keeping it running smoothly and ensuring your safety on the road. Safe travels and enjoy your sun-soaked adventures!

The hidden costs of loadshedding.
By Rein Snoeck Henkemans, CEO of Alumo Energy
The most obvious toll that rolling power outages take is a loss of productive time – we can’t work, we can’t cook, and we can’t enjoy after-hours leisure activities, such as watching TV and using the internet. There are, however, other costs involved that may not immediately spring to mind but end up hitting us in the wallet.
The various electric appliances and electronic devices that are an integral part of our lives are not built for ongoing power-outs and power-ins. The first hurdle they encounter happens when the power returns after a cut. It often does so in a surge – a power tsunami, if you will – that can knock your devices out of commission. Stand by for repair bills, or in a worst-case scenario, you may even have to replace the item in question.
Then there’s the spectre of unscheduled power cuts. Many items – computers specifically – don’t take kindly to being turned off at the mains, as opposed to going through their correct power-down procedure. The unexpected power break may even result in lost work or data.
A third factor to consider is the cumulative effect of devices being turned on and off continuously. A fridge that’s expected to have a lifespan of about 15 years may, for example, have it reduced to as little as three years, because of the ongoing assault of loadshedding.
What are my rights?
Ultimately, one ought to be able to claim from Eskom for loadshedding-related faults, right? Theoretically, yes, but it’s a lengthy and convoluted process, and experience has shown that the chances of a positive outcome are slim. Do you have the time, money, and stamina to drag yourself through this?
It’s likely that your insurance will pay for goods damaged by the power cuts, although conditions vary between insurers, and there are provisos. There is also the real possibility of your premiums increasing after such claims. For example: Was the appliance in question connected to a surge protector? You might also have to deal with your home being visited by an insurance assessor.
Even in the best-case scenario of your insurer paying you out in full (or, rarer yet, Eskom doing so) no one enjoys the hassle of the paperwork, the phone calls, and other logistics involved. Your easiest option is to ensure that all your sensitive devices, from fridges to desktop computers, are connected to power backup systems, in addition to surge protection – which may or may not be built into these pieces of equipment. That way, when the power cuts or returns, your devices will continue to receive a smooth and uninterrupted electrical supply.
This said, although the problem of loadshedding is an immediate one, many households in these financially trying times are not necessarily able to bear the entire cost upfront. In response, Alumo Energy provides different-sized solutions for different-sized homes, and offers consumers the option to pay overtime or even rent a system. By offering people finance packages, we allow them to resolve their power problems immediately, whilst easing their costs over time.
Beware the quick-buck merchants
Unfortunately, the overwhelming power issues being experienced by consumers have led to an exponential growth in fly-by-nighters; questionable businesses that have identified a need and opportunity, but don’t necessarily have the knowledge, experience, or commitment to provide proper advice upfront, and then, after-sales service. Many of these outlets don’t even stay in business long enough to fulfil their warranty obligations.
Instead, seek a professional solar solution provider with a strong track record and employees who are all experts in their field. At Alumo, we guide the consumer through the entire process and ensure that everything runs to plan. And, unlike the power supply, we can be relied upon.

PHARMA DYNAMICS FIRST TO TRANSLATE MEDICINE INFORMATION LEAFLETS INTO ISIZULU.
Pharma Dynamics is the first South African pharmaceutical company to translate medicine information leaflets into isiZulu.
Nicole Jennings, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics says the right to healthcare is a fundamental human right, which is recognised by the Constitution. “An important part of this right is for the public to have access to patient information leaflets (PILs) that accompany medicines in their respective native languages.”
She says even though it is important to heed the advice of a doctor when it comes to medication, PILs are documents of primary importance, because they enable patients to take their prescribed medication safely and correctly.
“Not everyone in our country is fluent in English or Afrikaans, nor can we assume that they understand specific medical terms in these two languages, which is why we felt it important to make these documents available in another mother tongue spoken by a large part of the local population.
“Providing this type of information in another local language ensures that a greater number of people have equal access to vital medical information. It promotes inclusivity and helps bridge language barriers, making healthcare more accessible to these communities.”
Other benefits of translating these documents into more South African languages include:
- Effective communication: Better communication between healthcare practitioners and patients is essential for safe and effective healthcare. When medical information is available in the patient’s native language, it facilitates a clearer understanding of important instructions, dosage guidelines, potential side effects, and other crucial details. Conversely, misunderstanding medical information can lead to errors in treatment or medication misuse, which can have serious consequences.
- Cultural sensitivity: Communities often have unique cultural beliefs, practices, and perspectives on health and illness. Translating information into their language allows for the incorporation of culturally sensitive language and concepts, making it more likely that individuals will trust and follow medical recommendations.
- Informed decision-making: Informed consent is a fundamental principle of medical ethics. Translating information into local languages empowers patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Without access to comprehensible medical information, individuals may not fully understand the risks and benefits of treatments, potentially leading to uninformed decisions.
- Health disparities: Many communities face health disparities and a higher burden of certain diseases and conditions. Providing medical information in their own language can help address these disparities by promoting better health literacy and understanding of preventative measures and treatment options.
- Improved health outcomes: Ultimately, when patients have access to medical information in their native language, it can lead to better adherence to treatment plans, improved health outcomes, and a reduction in healthcare-related complications.
Twenty-seven of Pharma Dynamics’ product leaflets have been translated into isiZulu, adding to the existing PILs available in English and Afrikaans already.
Jennings says it’s a starting point, and if feasible, the company may consider translating PILs into other local languages as well.
“PILs are documents that patients often refer to whenever they have doubts or simply want to obtain more specific information about the medicine that has been prescribed.
“Translating these leaflets into local languages is crucial for ensuring equitable access to healthcare, effective communication between healthcare providers and patients, informed decision-making and ultimately improving the overall health and well-being of South Africans.”
The isiZulu PILs are accessible via the QR code on the medication packs.

SA property market set for big rebound in 2024.
The local property market will see a resurgence in 2024 predicts Renier Kriek, Managing Director at Sentinel Homes.
“There was a bit of a property boom after the country emerged from the COVID lockdown. Since then, people have been held back from buying and selling property by various factors, but that is about to change for the better,” he says.
Factors impacting the local property market
In South Africa, property buying and selling have dropped steadily since 2021. In 2023, market volume was about 5% lower than 2019.
The factors driving this decline include negative consumer sentiment as a result of load shedding, the national logistical backlog, a stalling economy, high inflation, the rising cost of living, and a 475 basis point increase in the lending rate since the COVID lockdown ended.
However, people’s life circumstances continue to change, suggesting pent up demand building below the surface.
The number of first-time buyers – a solid indicator of market demand – has also decreased significantly, again implying that unsatisfied demand exists, which is building up in the background.
Outlook for 2024
Two main events signal that things are about to change.
First, economists agree that, as inflation slows in South Africa and the world, SARB will likely reduce the interest rate at its May or July Monetary Policy Committee meeting, which is in line with the move expected from the US Federal Reserve.
Second, the country will hold general elections this year, and probably be led for the first time by a coalition government at national level. While this might concern South Africans, leading to uncertainty and hesitance prior to the election, it also promises to bring new impetus to solving the nation’s dilemmas.
Kriek believes both these events will turn out well and will provide a release for the evident demand for property that is building in the background. “Then, we’ll see a dramatic increase in market activity,” he says.
Several lesser trends are also worth watching.
Smart money in the market
Right now, there’s a lot of smart money in the market – people who are aware that it is a good time to buy and are hunting for value.
Interest rates on mortgage loans granted have decreased significantly, partly because banks are competing for a shrinking market, but also because current smart money buyers are generally richer, have better credit records or present a much lower credit risk.
They are also paying higher deposits on average despite banks being willing to lend up to 105 percent of the purchase price.
In the same vein, wealthy buyers from abroad are snapping up luxury properties in Cape Town and other coastal areas in the price bracket above R20 million.
This trend is sure to continue into 2024 as that smart money looks to acquire more assets before the market turns on the two main positive signals expected for later in the year.
Semigration
Semigration remains a major trend in 2024 and smaller towns will continue to experience gentrification, no longer only in the popular Western Cape but across the country.
As more affluent buyers seek well-priced, quality stock in these locations, incumbents will see their property value rocket.
This may not be the only incentive for them to sell, though. Increases in rates and the cost of living may become unaffordable for them, pressuring them to move elsewhere. But where will they go?
With more than 80 percent of all building plan approvals being in coastal areas currently, the answer is plain to see. Market actors who are the creators of housing stock are readying themselves for the turning market and are doing so with an emphasis on coastal areas.
Co-buying
There is a marked increase in co-buying, that is, people buying a property together with someone other than their spouse. This includes friends, unmarried couples, investors, and those with business intentions. About one in every four properties purchased is now co-bought.
This approach overcomes the gap between property prices and income and is a way for younger people to enter the market while spreading risk between them.
Banks have also changed their policies to accommodate co-buying, with some allowing up to 12 individuals to join in the application.
Buy-to-let boom
The buy-to-let market is booming, especially in the Western Cape. One reason is that, due to insufficient stock and higher property prices at the coast, many semigrants are electing to rent while waiting for the positive market signals, in the form of interest rates and election outcome.
Some are also renting while waiting for new builds, given that stock is restricted in the coastal areas that are semigration destinations.
This growing demand provides a good incentive for buy-to-let landlords to invest in new homes and apartments, despite the high construction costs.
Almost 11% of all bond applications are currently investment purchases, which is higher than the norm.
Smaller properties
Another continuing trend in 2024 will be smaller plots and smaller properties.
High construction costs make it very difficult to create new stock that competes with existing stock in the market, though this shortfall is being rapidly eroded in coastal areas, but specifically Cape Town and surrounds.
So, both tenants and buyers will have to adapt to reduced living space unless they can afford to build their own at a premium.
Relief for homeowners
The number of buyers may be low but owners are also holding onto their properties for dear life, in the face of crippling interest rates.
Unfortunately, foreclosure may force some to sell in the near future. Yet, the predicted drop in interest rates promises relief to those who managed to stay afloat until that signal rings in the market.
When will the change happen?
Kriek expects the dam of pent-up demand to break in the coming winter. This is not a prime time for property sales, however, especially in the Western Cape. During this season, people tend to buy fewer properties.
“With lower transaction volumes during the winter months, there is likely to be a slight buyer’s market that will turn to a seller’s market in spring,” he says.

An Appeal To Register To Vote.
PLEASE register to vote. Our country WILL NOT change on its own, we have to make it happen and it will not happen if we do not register to vote. If the country gets worse than it already is after the elections we do not have that right to complain. Is this not true? Do not underestimate the power of a single registration/vote and think what good your vote or registration will do. What will it take for our people to sense the urgency, seriousness and importance of registering to vote this year as soon as possible? There is literally no excuse as it can now be done online and in the comfort of your home. If you do not have an internet connection, then make a plan, get someone who does have internet.
It does not matter WHO you vote for but register you must for if you do not at least register, then you cannot vote. Do you not realise how serious this is? Our country really needs you now more than ever before since we had our last 1994 elections.
The clock is ticking. Again, we repeat, change will not happen unless we make it happen. PLEASE go out and register which can be done online as soon as possible BEFORE the president makes the announcement as to when voting day will take place. Do not leave it to the last minute as once he makes the announcement, that’s it, you will not be allowed to vote.

I Am Because We Are: South Africa’s Future Is Our People.
Celebrate each other’s humanity, and we can overcome our challenges, writes ITHUBA CEO Charmaine Mabuza.
South Africa is a continent of stark contrasts. In its landscape, climate, socio-economic inequalities, and the diversity of its people. South Africans face unique socio-economic difficulties and opportunities which often rip our communities apart, but also bring us together, and the way to get there is through our actions.
In today’s complex world, where challenges both historical and contemporary seem to constantly test our resilience, I am often reminded of the powerful South African concept of Ubuntu – “I am because we are.” I feel strongly about this principle.
This philosophy, eloquently championed by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, resonates deeply with my personal and professional journey, especially in my role as CEO of ITHUBA.
The late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a true humanitarian, was a proponent of this remarkable view, when he wrote, “Ubuntu speaks of the very essence of being human,” and that “A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good.”
This concept sits very close to my heart. I grew up with a single mother, a strong woman who defied poverty and oppression through becoming an entrepreneur to feed her family and succeed in business. But her secret was community. She was not just an entrepreneur; she was a pillar of strength who understood that success is not a solitary pursuit. She knew that nobody is truly ‘self-made’, that we all rely on others, and others rely on us. She taught me the importance of community, that we thrive not by isolating ourselves, but by being part of a community, by being there for others as much as they are there for us.
Giving back is so important. But I don’t see it as giving back. That suggests a debt. I’m not fond of that view because it sounds like a burden. I see it as cultivating what has cultivated me.
This understanding has been integral to my approach at ITHUBA. As the National Lottery operator, we do more than just conduct games of chance. We create opportunities. It’s a mission that goes beyond business – it’s about making a tangible difference in people’s lives by. channelling resources into communities that need them most ITHUBA.
But it’s not enough. We strive to do more, to uplift and empower. Through the ITHUBA bursary program, we have helped over 600 learners become professionals. Our bursary programme has already helped over 600 learners qualify as professionals. We started a project to provide homes to our employees, which has since expanded to replacing houses for people across South Africa, including the KZN flood victims and differently abled people. ITHUBA also nurtures and develops small businesses, with a keen emphasis on women-owned enterprises.
Yet Ubuntu is not a social investment project, the essence of Ubuntu transcends these structured programs. As the Arch said, it’s about being human. How do we care for one another? What little things can we do to support each other? Even a friendly greeting in the supermarket queue or sharing empathy with drivers huddled at a broken traffic light—these things matter.
They celebrate our humanity and remind each other that I am here because we are. It’s about the everyday acts of kindness, the simple gestures of empathy and support. It’s about understanding that our individual actions, no matter how small, contribute to a larger tapestry of community and shared humanity.
South Africa’s people are its future. We have many challenges. The whole world does. But we’ve also achieved great things and can continue to do so while bringing everyone along. This is the spirit of Ubuntu and the effect of our ability to not just coexist but to support, uplift, and empower each other.
Today, do something small for someone else that doesn’t benefit or enrich you. Just do it for the love and respect of others and our beautiful nation. The dividends will pay out for generations. We come from a dehumanising past, but we can build a very empowering future for everyone.
These acts, these moments of shared humanity, are what will build a future that is not only empowering but deeply enriching for all.
We come from a past that sought to divide and dehumanize, but we have the power to forge a future that is inclusive, supportive, and empowering. This is the spirit that drives ITHUBA, and it’s the change we can all contribute to, one small act of kindness at a time.
