Volkies verloor 7–10, man van wedstryd Limpho Manana.
O/14 A span man van die wedstryd Olwethu Mkhwanazi. O/14B span man van die wedstryd Simba Nkosi.

Hokkie vs Ferrum
~Me. Anneli Cockroft~

Fietsryers presteer

Volkies groet me. Willemse.
Hoërskool Volksrust wil langs hierdie weg me. Me.

Coetzee is.
Coetzee sy merk gemaak by ons skool. Mnr.
Ms Coetzee was initially appointed as marketer of Volksrust High School, but she quickly distinguished herself as a lady of many talents. Her particular leadership skills have meant that she has organised extremely successful Amajuba Sports Weeks every year, as well as a very successful centenary weekend in 2022.
With athletic events, Ms Coetzee was always involved in lending an extra hand as athletics team manager and she hosted an extremely successful Inter High Athletics event during her tenure. Furthermore, Ms Coetzee coached netball and later also acted as netball organiser and sports secretary. The PUK-16 Semi-final was organized by her, the school’s annual sponsor functions, various school reunions, as well as all winter sports and athletics receptions. Ms Coetzee was also the centre manager for the grade 12 re-examinations.
Her empathy for the learners led to the founding of a cheerleader’s group which she then also coached herself. Furthermore, she organised Valentine’s balls and residence dinners, to expand the social experience of our learners. She also served on the clothing committee of the school and managed the diary and diary layout of our annual programme.
Part of Ms Coetzee’s duties were also the maintenance of the gardens of Volksrust High School. Here Ms Coetzee provided a valuable service to ensure that our school can boast of one of the most beautiful gardens in the town. Her fine eye for detail and her hard work in our gardens will be remembered for a long time.
~Marietjie Steyn~

Nuwe beheerliggaam voorsitter.
Hoërskool Volksrust wil langs hierdie weg vir me. Tydens ʼn interim verkiesing is mnr. Pieter Haasbroek aangewys as die nuwe beheerliggaam voorsitter. Volkies wens mnr.

Hoërskool Volksrust blink uit by kringtoekennings.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SPAYING/NEUTERING MYTHS
World Spay Day, advocates spaying and neutering of animals as a proven means of saving the lives of companion animals and strays alike, who might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street.
Spaying and neutering are important healthcare procedures for puppies and kittens, as well as for older dogs and cats, but myths and misconceptions about them may prevent pet owners from taking action.
Animal Welfare Scientist from the FOUR PAWS Science Unit, Sabrina Karl, says a pet should be spayed if there is the risk of unwanted reproduction either in their own household indoors or if the pets can roam around outdoors.
Another reason would be if there are various pets at home or outdoors and the risk of fighting or hurting each other exist due to natural competition, in particular due to them being of the same sex, or aggressions towards humans triggered by sexual hormones.
She advises dog owners to consider neutering a male dog if he shows behaviours that indicate a high stress level from staying inside and trying to escape to reach females in heat outside, intensely howling, scratching doors, or refusing to eat.
Dr Annelize Roos of Cape Town, a veterinarian who has completed thousands of spaying and neutering procedures by way of her community veterinary clinic, Envirovet CVC, has through the years identified various myths surrounding spaying.
Dr Roos often works with FOUR PAWS on sponsored community outreach projects that promote spaying and neutering like in 2022 in Bitterfontein in Namaqualand.
She points out one common misconception is that male dogs that are neutered are not effective guard dogs or are unable to hunt or track as well as before they were spayed or neutered. Dr Roos also remarks that there is a belief that a female dog must have a litter before she can be considered a ‘good dog’. She emphasises these beliefs are false.
In fact, neutering can reduce sexually driven aggression and help male dogs to stay focused on their guard and hunting dog duties. Ultimately, these procedures can help to keep pets healthier and happier for longer.

Religious Message for the Christian Community in Volksrust.
Spiritual word.
Ok, now it is clear that we should wait on the Lord and not try to make our own plans, the question is; can we?
In 1 Samuel 13 the story goes like this. Saul was 40 years old when he started his reign over Israel. In the second year of his reign Jonathan, his son, smote a garrison of the Philistines which caused a load of trouble. Only Saul and Jonathan had swords, no one in Israel could even get any metal work instrument except from the Philistines who oppressed them. Saul had only 3000 men to fight, 1000 of them were with Jonathan. The Philistines came with 30 000 chariots, 6 000 horseman and a LOT of soldiers to punish Israel. Saul had to wait for Samuel to bring the burned offering to bless them for the coming confrontation.
After 7 days Samuel had still not pitched up, many of the men (we cannot call them soldiers as they did not even have weapons) had left Saul and he decided to bring the burned offering himself. Of course Samuel arrived just after he did the offering and Saul was cursed for this as Samuel told him that his kingdom had come to an end.
(Saul actually reigned for about 13 years after this but it was a troubling time for him).
Putting myself in his place, I really don’t think I would have done any better than Saul. I do not know, even with the knowledge that the answer is that I need to wait on God for an answer, if I can do it. But, now that we know that the answer is to wait upon Him, we can at least strive to do that. Fortunately God gave us a helper, the Holy Spirit (John 14:16 & 17) who helps us. Christ in us, the Hope of our salvation. Be blessed.

Religious Message for the Noahide Community in Volksrust.
The Shechinah in general.
We do not always have a positive image of a king in our current society. We see him as someone who wants to enrich himself at the expense of the common man, someone who plays the boss and wages war. But a true king protects his people, giving everything he has to ensure that his people are well off.
In the Adon Olam, we say: He who was, is and will be King. He was King even before this world was created, but a king is not a king without servants. But this desire – to put it bluntly – made Him King and this is the Shechinah at the highest level, in the highest heaven. But while it is in the highest heaven it is not revealed, it can only be revealed here in our physical world. You can name the Shechinah as the revelation of G-d’s Presence as King of His World.
HaShem created, shaped, and made the world and Gan Eden and placed there the first humans, Adam and Chava. The garden they were to guard and preserve. And also make G-ds Kingship visible by not eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. After eating the fruit, the Shechinah retreated in parts. After the sin of Cain and Abel, the sin of Noah’s generation, the tower of Babel, it retreated further and further, to the highest heaven.
With Abraham, this changed. He recognized G-d and made His Name known among men. People who were his guests and wanted to thank him for his hospitality, he pointed out that they should give their thanks to G-d. As a result, the Shechinah slowly returned to earth. This return to earth culminated at Mount Sinai. Here the highest heaven – the Throne of G-d – touched the physical world, so to speak. Rashi points out in his explanation to Deuteronomy 5:19 that this was the highest form of revelation of G-d’s Kingship that He publicly revealed, thereafter it never occurred.
At that time, the people were at the same spiritual level as Adam and Eve in Gan Eden, making this revelation possible to the whole people. However, after hearing the 10 G-d divine sayings, the people chose that the rest of what G-d would speak would come to them through Moses because Moses was at a higher spiritual level than them and he could handle the intensity of G-d’s words, as they were afraid the intensity would be too high for them. Moses was at such a high level that he was able to approach G-d’s Throne and receive the Torah there and take it with him to our physical world. Which allowed the Shechinah to live among the people again, even at a higher level than in Gan Eden.
However, things turned out differently, the people, led by the Erev Rav, made themselves a golden calf. The Shechinah would eventually reside among the people, after G-d’s forgiveness, but in the Mishkan. In the Mishkan, the Levites and the Kohanim would serve in place of the firstborn of the people, because they had not participated in the sin of the golden calf.
After the destruction of the Second Temple, the Shechinah went into exile with the people. But soon when the Third Temple becomes visible, it will fully return to the Temple. HaShem will be King of the whole world and everyone will recognise and serve Him.
Personally experiencing of the Shechinah.
Anyone who already now acknowledges and commits His Kingship is already experiencing an ever-increasing revelation of His Kingship here and now.
That is a growth process, and even in that growth process there are times when you experience the Shechinah more or less.
As a young girl, I could talk intensively with HaShem, under the stars, experiencing Him. As I got older, that slowly became less however when I was 13 and decided to give my heart to Him, that intense moment from before was back for a while. But even that waned again, it was wave after wave of experiencing the Shechinah. At the moments in my life when I sought Him, He stayed with me. Like He stayed with the people when they stayed at an encampment in the desert.
Now that I am a bat Noah, the surges are no longer there, it is more a gradual growing awareness of His Kingship a trust in His goodness even when things are momentarily difficult.
I think I have felt my trust in Him, and therefore His Presence, the most after a car accident (and another personal event), and it is for this reason that I know and trust that when the time will come to leave this world, my awareness of His Presence will be the greatest.

Religious Message for the Muslim Community in Volksrust.
Muslims Prepare For Ramadan In RSA
Muslims across South Africa are preparing for the Islamic Month of Ramadan which is expected to dawn on Thursday night, The 23rd March 2023.
Islam follows the Lunar calendar and the sighting of the moon signals the start of the Islamic month. In Islam, the new day also begins just after sunset.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk usually having a pre-dawn meal (before the fast begins). Once the fast starts, they are not allowed to eat a morsel of food or even take a sip of water until sunset.
Fasting is also a spiritual discipline to abstain from bad actions. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims usually break this fast with a date and a glass of water.
The Holy Month of Ramadan is more than just a month of fasting; it is a month that has many benefits and rewards for Muslims.
Fasting or abstaining from food also teaches important lessons including compassion in that a fasting person will understand what others who are hungry and also less fortunate, who do not have a daily meal go through on a daily basis.
Respecting The Fasting Person:
There are many non-Muslims who also respect and support their Muslim colleagues who are fasting by having their lunch meals out of sight of those who are fasting.
During Ramadan, Muslims men also attend the Mosque frequently where the Holy Quran (which has 30, thirty, chapter) is recited every night until the end of the blessed month.

World TB Day: Creating TB awareness across South Africa
Johannesburg, South Africa. (March. 23, 2023) – Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death in South Africa1. According to the World Health Organization’s Global TB Report, close to 304 000 people in South Africa developed TB in 2021, bringing the country’s incidence rate to 513 per 100 0002. South Africa also has the highest burden of TB/HIV and multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB)3.
In 2019 a total of 58 000 people died of TB in South Africa. Despite the high death rate, TB is still relatively misunderstood and not often discussed. However, it is essential for everyone to be aware of this disease and how they can prevent and screen for it.
24 March, 2023 is World TB Day and serves as a global platform to raise awareness, improve education, and catalyse personal, collective and government action.
BD (Becton Dickinson), a leading global medical technology and diagnostics provider, will be using this day to bring awareness and education around TB.
The country’s TB epidemic is driven by a number of factors including low socio-economic status and a high HIV coinfection burden3. Effective TB treatments are available and South Africa has made considerable progress in fighting the disease, but more is needed to bring it under control. According to the First National TB Prevalence Survey (2018), delayed health-seeking behaviour among individuals with TB and the high burden of undiagnosed disease in communities also drive the TB epidemic.
“We are all aware of the different challenges health systems are facing. That negatively impacts on health outcomes including detection of TB cases and their effective treatment. In 2023, we can approach this major contributor to South Africa’s burden of disease with new energy and step-up awareness and TB services to all communities,” explains Ian Wakefield, General Manager of BD Africa.
BD supports TB education and aims to improve access to solutions needed for the diagnosis and care of TB. It forms part of continued research and development of products and technologies used to diagnose and treat TB patients.
About Tuberculosis (TB) and why it is important to get tested.
TB is an infectious disease caused by the spread of respiratory droplets containing a bacteria (bacilli), Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The likelihood of transmission is affected by the the strength of the infectious source, infectiousness of the TB bacteria, the immune status of the host patient, environmental stresses, and biosocial factors such as living conditions.
Active TB has a greater burden of TB bacteria than latent TB and acts as an infection source for contacts4. Latent tuberculosis infection is the state in which the person is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis but does not have any clinical symptoms and the infection is not detected through x-ray or microbiological testing.
TB testing and screening are essential for public health. TB can spread from person to person easily and can be fatal if untreated. It is important to get tested if you have any of the following symptoms:
· General feelings of sickness or weakness
· Unexplained weight loss
· Fever
· Night sweats
· Coughing with/without coughing up blood
· Chest pain.
It is also important to get tested if you are at high risk for developing active TB or are at high risk of being exposed to the infection.
Those at high risk for developing TB disease include:
· People who have spent time with someone who has TB
· People from a country where TB disease is common like South Africa
· People who live or work in high-risk settings such as correctional facilities, long-term care facilities or nursing homes, and homeless shelters
· Healthcare workers who care for patients at increased risk for TB
· Infants, children and adolescents exposed to adults who are at increased risk for latent tuberculosis infection or TB.
“TB affects hundreds of thousands of South Africans. Our responsibility is to create awareness and reduce stigma as this would help encourage individuals to go for screening. If we are able to act with certainty and speed to identify possible cases and secure a diagnosis, we can start treatment early. This helps prevent further spread of TB, reduce potential for more severe, treatment-resistant forms of the disease and save lives. BD researches and develops medical technologies that support health systems, health workers and benefit their patients. We are proud to participate in this vital initiative – it is a giant step towards making quality healthcare accessible to South Africans who need it most,” concludes Wakefield.

SA JKA Standardisation Seminar Biggest Yet.
The South African Japan Karate Association Standardisation Seminar took place in Johannesburg on 18 March 2023 at the Wanderers in Illovo, with black belts (Shodans and above) from across South Africa attending.
This annual mass training is where the black belts gain knowledge which they can then relay to their respective dojos around the country.
The day started off with mass training with Johan La Grange Sensei (Chief Instructor) who placed emphasis on focussing on the target while at the same time ensuring that your own safety would not be jeopardised; “that is maintaining an effective distance for an effective attack or strike” he explained.
The split Kata class led by various instructors (Sensei) worked on the katas Kanku-dai, Tekki-Shodan, Tekki-Nidan and Tekki-Sandan, refining the moves for better technique and “quickness”.
A judging workshop, also split into groups depending on qualifications, was held prior to the final session of kumite. “The criteria for being a good judge or referee is of course, knowing the rules,” explained Johan La Grange Sensei “but this is not enough. Practicing to judge and learning what points are good and which are not is fundamental to being a fair and impartial judge or referee” he stated, stressing that this would have to be practiced as often as possible at the dojos.
The concepts of “sen” were explained by Warren Bainton Sensei and practiced during the kumite session. He explained that “Go no sen is when a combatant takes the initiative in a fight after the opponent has already started an attack. In other words, once the opponent starts to attack, the defending combatant performs an effective block and counter. Sen no sen is when the combatant attacks the attack and must be faster than the opponent and sen sen no sen occurs when the combatant takes the initiative and attacks before the attacker”.
