- The ANC says it will apply its mind on the Reserve Bank’s latest interest rates hike. Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago yesterday announced the decision to increase the re-purchase rate by 25 basis points.
- The Johannesburg Municipal Council will today elect a new mayor.
It’s not sure at this stage who is likely to wear the mayoral chain.
Yesterday, Dr Mpho Phalatse was ousted as executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg. She was voted out in a motion of no confidence.
140 councillors voted for the motion while 129 councillors voted against it.
The motion was tabled by three parties – the African Transformation Movement, African Independent Congress and Al-Jamah-Ah party. - National assembly speaker Nisiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has appointed senior counsel to challenge the EFF’s urgent Constitutional Court application regarding the vote on Phala Phala. The EFF applied to the court to have the vote declared unconstitutional, invalid, and set aside. The party also wants a re-vote via secret ballot. It cited the Speaker as the main respondent in its papers and the DA and IFP as the fourth and fifth respondents respectively.
